An HorseWalls
Mom + Pop / Shock

- The second full-length from one of Brisbane's biggest indie successes. 'Making it' has produced something odd in An Horse, they're like a time capsule preserving the sound of indie-pop before it was reworked into the likes of The John Steel Singers or The Hungary Kids Of Hungary, almost the only remaining example of the old sound. It is even weirder thinking of them in the context of Tegan & Sara, with whom they've been touring and whose regular producer Howard Redekopp helmed Walls. There is actually a certain similiarity: that slightly emo girliness set to pumping indie-rock, but it caught me completely off-guard when I'm so used to that part of their sound that derives from Iron On or Screamfeeder. Does that mean they're growing up, changing? Maybe a little, sound-wise. I'm not sure there's a corresponding increase in the depth of their music. This is a competent rock record but not one that knocks my socks off. I wish them all the Lederman-flavoured success they can possibly have - at the very least that would prove that Brisbane indie bands can get themselves a little bit of that - but I might think that it is because the majority of rock fans are not after something that is intrinsically very interesting.
