Bedroom Suck

- For those lost souls shin deep in Brisbane's seedy underground, it feels like local three piece Martyr Privates have been on the verge of releasing their debut 12” for what seems like forever. Despite only officially releasing a handful of songs in their three or so years of existence, Martyr Privates sporadic yet recurrant live shows have buried themselves in the hearts of lil’ heroes all around our big, red rock. After an eternity of deep thought I still can’t conjure up a better description than that Martyr Privates are a really good rock'n'roll band.

Few bands have chipped away and chugged along as charmingly as these three. Martyr Privates are happier than any that their self-titled debut full length has finally found a release window among Bedroom Suck's stacked schedule. The group, through little fault of their own, likely on the verge of being sick of these songs- some of which have been a part of their live sets for years now.

Despite the wait and perhaps even helped by it, Martyr Privates debut proper is one of the most well rounded and fleshed out records I've had the pleasure of listening to all year. It's a record that doesn't buy into a single current musical trend or sound, an album that feels like every ounce of fat has been blasted from it. Martyr Privates squeeze in nine songs in just a touch over half an hour. Every song is as rich and realised as the last, the perfect blend of slacker rock, grunge and psychedelia. It's music that moves at this creeping tempo that works itself deep inside me: hypnotic music lulling me into these blank comas, punctuated by frighteningly vivid fever dreams. Once the residue of madness is scraped away, you're left with refreshingly straight down the line rock that gets all the little things right. This is an ode to good songwriting and slogging it out from one of the better bands in a town quietly teeming with them.
