Afterglo / Inertia

Love it or hate it, dubstep has been a huge part of the electronic scene and time has left poor ol dubby-steppy feeling a little limp, a little dumb and has found itself becoming the token"in" sound for a lot of cross-over artists (I swear there is a dubstep-esque breakdown on the new Jay-Z & Kanye West record, though admittadely it's pretty badass). Though dustep may have seen it's best days, this hasn't stopped certain savvy electronic producers stepping up, taking the elements of dustep and creating something that still seems fresh and new. Most recently mysterious London artist SBTRKT (Subtract) blended elements of dustep, pop & more straightforward traditional electronics to construct an album that, though it didn't change the world, was thoroughly enjoyable and - for the most part - proved that when you use it sparingly, dustep still be a viable and vibrant force in modern music. Now up steps another mysterious English figure, Bristol's own Phaeleh (Fella). Bristol is most known musically for being the birthplace of trip-hop and though Phaeleh is a pretty large step away from all that, you can't help but hear a certain debt in his quiet, crystaline sounds to the stylishness of Massive Attack or the atmospherics of Portishead. Phaeleh's debut, The Cold In You is a complex and understated affair, using flourishes of dustep among more traditional electronica, IDM & even a touch of drum and bass. A refreshingly restrained record that - though it gets the nod from dubsteps current luminaries and has the ear of the kids - doesn't buy into the hype.
