SiettaThe Seventh Passenger
Elefant Traks

- The big electro-soul sound is coming from Darwin! With this album Sietta's James Mangohig and Caiti Baker appear to have already bust out of the north end and taken over a large number of Australia's ears. It's funny, Baker's muscular vocals are reliably big across this, but Mangohig's backing beats and instrumentalism provide some quite different contexts for her voice. There's soul, obviously, but also r'n'b, electro, reggae, hip hop and even a bit of dubstep. Paradoxically it's like she's the base for him to build on. The variation is a good idea, I think straight up neo-soul can be both effete and a bit boring. The Seventh Passenger brings both strength and a durable listenability, which is good because I expect we'll be hearing quite a lot more from them.
