Projections on a Silver Screen - July 2012

The Amazing Spider-Man is a reboot of the previously trilogy. Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) plays the adolescent Peter Parker, our friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man, who is in love with Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). While investigating his parent’s mysterious disappearance, Peter is led to Oscorp Industries where he meets his father’s former colleague, Dr Curtis Connors (Rhys Ifans). While Peter comes to terms with new abilities he develops after being bitten by a radioactive spider, Dr Connors finds himself going through a similar transformation after injecting himself with Reptilian DNA. The film promises to please fans of the comic series by following the original source material much more closely than previous installments of the franchise.

From Blue Sky Studios comes Ice Age: Continental Drift. The gang returns for the fourth instalment of the series in which their home continent is set adrift (having lived through the ice age, dawn of the dinosaurs, and continental drifts the main characters must be millions of years old). Manny (Ray Romano), Diego (Denis Leary) and Sid (John Leguizamo) set off on an adventure where they’ll encounter a sinister group of pirates determined to stop them from returning home.

A Royal Affair is a historical drama from Denmark. Set in the 18th century it tells the story of Queen Caroline Mathilde (Alicia Vikander) who was married to the mentally ill King Christian VII of Denmark (Mikkel Følsgaard). The queen falls in love with the Kings personal physician Johann Friedrich Struensee (Mads Mikkelsen) and together they start a revolution that would change Denmark forever. The film won awards for Best Actor and best Script at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival.

Masters of 3D computer-animation, Pixar, bring us the fairy-tale story Brave. Merida (Kelly Macdonald) is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson). Longing for independence, Merida defies an age-old custom and inadvertently unleashes chaos in the kingdom. She turns to an eccentric old Witch (Julie Walters) for help and is granted an ill-fated wish. The film boasts some of the most detailed computer animation ever seen after Pixar rewrote their animation system for the first time in 25 years.

Feature directorial debut from Rupert Sanders, Snow White & the Huntsman is an epic retelling of the classic fairy tale. Kristen Stewart plays the titular Snow White, who is declared by a Magic Mirror to be the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen (Charlize Theron). The Queen sends a Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) on a mission to kill her, however on discovering that he has been manipulated by the evil ruler, he turns against the Queen’s men and fights alongside Snow White.

Adapted from the Broadway musical of the same name, Rock of Ages tells the story of small town girl Sherrie and city boy Drew, who meet on the Sunset Strip while pursuing their Hollywood dreams. Featuring an ensemble cast including Tom Cruise, Russel Brand, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Alec Baldwin, the musical is built around the glam rock hits of the 80s. The cheese fest of a soundtrack includes performances of songs made famous by acts such as Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Journey, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison, Whitesnake and more.

Prometheus is the latest film from sci-fi director extraordinaire Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner). A team of scientists discover clues as to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a mission to a distant planet. There, they must fight against a threat to the safety of their team as well as the future of the human race. While being set in the same universe as the original Alien, Prometheus is a standalone film suitable for veterans and newcomers to the mythos alike.

Also being released this month is The Dark Knight Rises, the conclusion to the Batman film series from director Christopher Nolan. After assuming blame for Harvey Dent’s murder Batman (Christian Bale) is now hunted by Gotham city law enforcement led by his friend Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman). Meanwhile Batman must protect the city from destruction at the hands of the villain Bane (Tom Hardy). If you haven’t seen the previous movies in the series, or would like to reacquaint yourself, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight will both be showing at Dendy Cinemas beginning on the 18th of July.
