Timothy Fairless

The music of composer Timothy Fairless is equally at home drifting amongst treated field recordings topped with sparse grand piano as it is contemptuously abusing the ear of its audience with unrelenting noise and hammering repetition.  Perhaps it was the competing influences of a rigid classical piano childhood followed by an eccentric and rebellious contemporary/free jazz adolescence that finally took a toll - or crystallised into something more.

Inspired by contemporary pioneers (think Cage, Reich and Eno) and immersed in the new wave of experimental music, he likes processing found sounds and playing his piano with a coin, but can’t quite get away from walls of doom-laden guitars.  His musical constructions are made with a combination of traditional instruments (guitars, piano, bass, synthesizers, strings & drums) combined with treated field recordings and distorted sonic snapshots.

Timothy’s work includes scores for several award winning short films, an advert for BMW (called Continue to Drive) where he made music with nothing but sounds harvested from the cars, and two solo EPs – Measurement (2014) and Plural (2015).  Measurement was described as “A work of depth ... - there's plenty to go back and dig through,” by Triple Zed’s Chris Cobcroft.  More recently, Plural received praise from in-depth music reviewer Richard Allen from A Closer Listen. “…a unified work, a rare achievement. This is an album of flow,” writes Allen.
