Youth Review: An Evening with Liz Callaway
As a Broadway fan, I am ashamed to admit I didn’t know who Liz Callaway was. After spending an evening with her, I am so glad to have seen heard her now. If you don’t know her name, I guarantee you’ve heard her voice! Aside from her vast Broadway list of credits, she was also Princess Jasmine from Aladdin, and Anastasia, just to name a couple of her Disney credits.
Callaway’s voice truly is comparable to a Disney princess. She is the epitome of a Broadway voice, powerful and perfect in her pitch and tone. After being a little sceptical and unsure of what to expect, my doubts were delightfully removed with her goose-bump inducing opening number of ‘You Don’t Own Me’.
But not only was her singing performances great, she had fantastic stage presence (after clearly many years of practise on stage), engaging the audience from the get go. She was witty and relaxed and made the whole evening extremely comfortable and fun.
There was something for everyone to enjoy, Broadway highlights, film music, and ‘something from the 60s’, as well as a hilarious Sondheim parody that had the audience in stitches. While trying to write this, I could help but hum ‘And another hundred words just flew out of brain!’
Callaway received two well-deserved standing ovations for her fantastic and thrilling performance. If I could get the chance, I would listen to her voice all day.
