(Game) Id - Doom Resurrection
Staying true to the franchise, Doom: Resurrection has the player step into the shoes of a lone space-marine who has been sent to Mars to clean up a botched experiment, leaving the inhabitants as zombies and flooded the base with hellish creatures. This version is closer to a Role Playing Game than a First Person Shooter. There’s no free roaming, you’re stuck on a set path and you face off with enemies rather than duck and hide from them. You press buttons to dodge attacks and find cover as an alternative. the crosshair in this game is aimed by pivoting your iPhone or iPod Touch. This can become a tad frustrating because when there are zombies closing in to chew on your brains, you really can't be taking your sweet time.
Obviously the graphics don’t have the realistic detail that their PC counterparts do, but they’re reasonably detailed, surpassed only by the first person shooters that Gameloft have released. The sounds suit the mood perfectly. All you can hear is the dull hum of the scientific equipment and some creepy white-noise.
If you want a first person shooter, then Doom Resurrection isn’t the prime choice. Id has ported the original Doom and Wolfenstein 3D to fulfil those needs (Wolfenstein is only $2.50, Bargain!). Alternatively if you want a realistic 3D shooter then investigate Gameloft’s N.O.V.A or Modern Combat series. The price of Doom Resurrection a tad extravagant for $8.99 but despite the lack of freedom in the game, it’s still one of the best looking games for the iPhone out there.
