Game Review
(Game) Squashy Software/Handmark Inc. - Platypus
Platypus is characterised by its particular style of graphics which utilize pre-rendered Claymation moulds. So basically this means it looks like the bastard offspring of Wallace and Gromit. When ships are destroyed, they don’t explode, they go splat! It still looks slick on the surface but the animation appears choppy and fragmented compared to the PC version. iPhones can easily handle the animation, but it looks permanently lagged.
The original computer version had this awesome techno soundtrack which would really set the mood, now it’s been replaced by this horrible 8-bit remix which is nowhere near as satisfying. However it’s interesting to note that the original soundtrack consisted of Commodore 64 remixes , thus something could have went astray legally, preventing their re-appearance.
Gyroscopic controls on Platypus don’t really suit the fast style action. When there are spacecraft and projectiles hurtling towards you, it’s simply not fast enough. Thankfully you can change to control the spacecraft with your finger which is far easier. The only problem then is that the ship can get stuck on the edge of the screen and you end up as a sitting duck.
If you’re a resourceful Google searcher, you might be able to pick up a free copy of the PC version. In this case, the original is far more rewarding. Nevertheless the gameplay is still equally as addictive as the PC version. However, for $3.99, it’s pretty deceptive and not really worth the price. Instead you should save your money for their upcoming game called Cletus Clay http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dq3Cq16wpu0
