Game Review
(Game) Id Software - Wolfenstein 3D
Id Software is one company who has recognised the potential market in iPhone gaming and has ported the original 1992 game and the Spear of Destiny expansion. It’s a bargain at $2.50 or you can get a lite version for free. Oh, and you get to kill Hitler – EPIC WIN!
In Wolfenstein 3D you take control of Allied soldier William "B.J." Blazkowicz and guide him through several missions taking out guards, rabid dogs and even mutants. Despite the gameplay being rather repetitive, it is so addictive blasting away Nazis and pillaging treasure. The graphics look crystal clear through an iPhone screen and there are no issues with speed or frame rate. The controls are also incredibly easy to use compared to a lot of other shooting games for the iPhone. The MIDI music is fake but it’s bearable. Unfortunately you can’t turn off the music and keep the sound effects. One massive problem I had with my particular version is that it kept crashing during the first episode of the Spear of Destiny, but other than that, it was well worth the price tag and memory space.
If Wolfenstein 3D has proved one thing, it’s this: No matter how much you dress your game up with fancy graphics, it’s a waste of time if it’s not playable. Even 18 years later it’s still equally as enjoyable despite looking archaic. Seriously, this is a must have, equally as much as angry birds or paper toss. Oh, and did I mention you get to kill Hitler – EPIC WIN!
