Chicks On Speed, Brisbane Powerhouse 23 February

A small, yet diverse crowd has gathered for Chicks On Speed's DJ set at Brisbane's Powerhouse, and despite the small numbers, you can feel the excitement in the air. The floor of the Turbine Platform is set up to create a relaxed ambience, with lounges, high bar tables, stools and mood lights setting the scene.

As expected, Alex Murray-Leslie and Melissa Logan hit the stage donning vibrant outfits – Murray-Leslie has attached what looks like a cardboard cut-out of the iconic banana from The Velvet Underground and Nico’s album cover to hers! They open the night with Prototype; a song we are told comes from their forthcoming album Scream, and it becomes apparent the duo are unsatisfied with the proceedings. They continually request more volume from the Powerhouse sound crew, while Logan tells the audience, “There’s a dancefloor here for you to use; I don’t know why the floor has been set up with chairs and tables, we want you to dance!” Eager to obey the whims of The Chicks, punters jump out of their seats and start to loosen up to the beat of Goldfrapp’s Wonderful Electric and MIA’s Bad Girlz.

Logan addresses the audience, saying that as a group, Chicks On Speed don’t know exactly where home is; Australia, Germany, or the United Kingdom. The common ground for each country however, is a feeling of shame towards respective founding ancestors (Nazis and British colonisers). The spiel proves to be an apt segue for the ironically danceable track Der Mussolini by Daf, which leads into Beni Benassi’s Satisfaction, Minty’s Plastic Bag and Useless Man, and Olivia Newton John’s Xanadu. While they are billed to play until 12am, the set unfortunately wraps up an hour early, with their hit song Wordy Rappinghood.

Despite technical frustrations, Chicks On Speed deliver a captivating hour of music, and graciously pose for photos with the crowd after the show. They also announce they will be opening an art exhibition at the Institute of Modern Art in August, so stay tuned for more details, as it is sure to be an outrageous display!
