Live Review
The Counterfeit Umbrellas @ The Milk Factory, 8th November 2015
A Sunday afternoon at The Milk Factory and five-piece The Counterfeit Umbrellas are the headline act. They opened with one of their well-known songs, #55 in the 4ZZZ's 2014 Hot 100, 'I will be your home', and I enjoyed the piano tone from the keys.
They effortlessly walked through their tracks, each seemingly containing some proclaiming lyrics: 'I will be your home', 'I can feel your heart beat', 'I do it all for you'; and one set of lyrics that particularly connected with me were 'I will always no longer be afraid of what will come my way'. I was surprised to hear quite a change-up in their set, something a little different, more gypsy than their other tracks, and when I commented on it, my gig-buddy told me it was a cover of The Wine Song, by Cat Empire (which I couldn't believe I hadn't picked). It was delivered with energy and conviction, and the crowd lapped it up.
Delivering a Mumford-and-Sons style sound, mixing folk, country and pop sounds, their performance came together into a very palatable and fun sound for a grisly grey Sunday arvo. You can definitely tell why they've had the support gigs that they've had. They mentioned they were going into the studio the following day, so I'm keen to seek out another one of their gigs soon.
