Live Review

Hidden TreasureZZZ #2 @ The New Globe Theatre

Hidden TreasureZZZ (HT) is a brand new Saturday afternoon event for lovers of live music who prefer to avoid the night. HT is also an event for people who may have not yet discovered just how much they in fact love live music. All are welcome at HT.

There were smiles a plenty on the faces of everyone who came to Hidden TreasureZZZ#1 in August and all evidence points towards Hidden TreasureZZZ#2 being an equal success. HT also aims to be a fundraiser for 4ZZZ and is gratefully supported by the New Globe Theatre and Coopers Ale.

Peter Wilson Green opens the afternoon in dazzling style. Peter lists Tom Waits, The Pogues and Bad Seeds among his influences and their sounds do filter through. Peter is ably backed by a collection of talented musicians. One of those musicians is drummer Alex ‘Sleepy’ Morrison who entertained us as a guitarist at the first Hidden TreasureZZZ with his band Mutanteer Premium. PWG is most definitely one of Brisbane’s hidden treasures and well worth getting out to see just as soon as you can.

Kham are up next. No stranger to the Brisbane Garage Rock scene, Kham is the latest in a series of projects for lead singer Gary Summers. Summers’ previous incarnations include Geomantra and Rook. Kham is definitely a continuation of the solid ground that each of those bands prepared. Kham is a fusion of heavy rock bliss overlayed with the sustained, creaminess of Summers’ vocals. Kham is guaranteed to both arouse and satisfy lovers of meaty rock.

We are now girding our ears and expectations for The Boho Mofos. What quickly becomes evident to spectators is The Boho Mofos are as much an experience as they are a performance. Political satire is one of the pillars that supports the growing appeal of this act. We are treated to appearances from Gina Rinehart, Malcolm Turnbull, and good ol’ Tony Abbott, who all copped their due roasting from this keen-witted group. The music is damn fine too. An assortment of jaunty sing along, toe tappers, spreading the good feels far and wide.

Sadly all good things come to an end, but what an end it is with Faux Bandit tearing up the stage in distinctive style. There might only be two of them but they lay some pretty hefty, fuzzy, tasty bricks in that wall of sound they are pumping out. Faux Bandit have all the ingredients they need to make a big name for themselves; the sound, the lyrics, the look, and Adam and Josh are both terrifically nice guys as well. I predict it shan’t be long before you will be heading to arenas to see these guys. Type Faux Bandit into your browser of choice and get acquainted with brilliance.

As the afternoon winds up I see many happy faces and hear many people saying, “I’m definitely coming to the next one.” A couple of the reasons why I think Hidden TreasureZZZ is becoming so popular is firstly because parents can bring their under 18’s along for a great family afternoon. Secondly, what makes HT such a great event is the growing team of dedicated people who help to put it together. Those dedicated people are also the voices behind some of the shows at Zed. Comet from Eco Radio, Randall from Neon Meate Dream of an Octofish (who also rocks some mad origami skills) and Josh from Dark Essence, oh and me too – Jae from the J Spot.

So if you would like to ride the wave of excitement that Hidden TreasureZZZ is creating in Brisbane on Saturday afternoons once a month at the New Globe Theatre then come along to Hidden TreasureZZZ#3 on 1 October 2016.
