Live Review
Karnivool @ The Triffid
Its night number two at for one of the busiest men in Australian music Ian Kenny this time over with his band Karnivool to play two sold out dates at the Triffid in Brisbane. A very large crowd has gathered early for this one being one of the coldest nights of the year in Brisbane no one minds squishing into the venue or being within inches of one another tonight.
The band has brought over fellow Perth Band Fait brining their atmospheric and ambient sounds to the crowd tonight. The band is incredibly tight and rehearsed in their sound and even though they have only burst onto the scene a couple years ago. The only downside to the performance is due to the chilled and instrumental nature of the music very little if not any interaction is made between the crowd making it hard to pick out when one song has ended and another has begun. Nonetheless the band play out a solid set and has the crowds attention through out and let the music do the talking for them.
After some delays with set up Karnivool take to the stage with an eruption from the crowd as the opening riff of "Goliath" from 2009's Sound Awake sends the crowd into a frenzy. The boys follow this up with new song “All It Takes” which gets a great reaction from the crowd but its when they launch into “Simple Boy" and “Set Fire To The Hive” coupled with Ian Kenny hypnotizing dancing that would make Peter Garrett proud that the whole audience really start going crazy, It’s a big occasion for the guys of Karnivool with this being their first set of shows for the year so they showcase all they have to offer with a good mix from the Themata and Sound Awake albums with a few cameos from latest album Asymetry and a few new tracks road tested for the occasion, "Roqeufort" and "Themeta" back to back send the crowd into an absolute craze to close out the main set leaving the build up to them coming back on stage for an encore at fever pitch.
There is little time in between when the band leave the stage to when they come back to when they jump into "Aeons" and closing track "New Day" which is a good thing as they have the entire crowd completely immersed in their music and performance. As the crowd stars to file out in the cold Brisbane evening its clear that even with some time away Karnivool have lost no support also evident in the back to back sold out shows to start the tour. Karnivool have put on a faultless performance tonight and its clear that they will be able to handle the much larger venues at the end of the year with the Deftones just fine and may even give them some competition in terms of fan base.
