Zeus Baby, Winners of the Tour de France, Strangers - Beetle Bar 13 December 2012

Thursday 13 December 2012 is a massive night for music in Brisbane as the city plays host to acts like Blondie, The Stranglers, The Saints, Velocoraptor, DZ Deathrays, Bleeding Knees Club and the list goes on and on. I'm sure all those performances are great, but greater still is Zeus Baby in all their ethereal splendour.

Supporting Zeus Baby tonight are Strangers and Winners of the Tour DeFrance. Strangers share a lead vocalist with that dark triad Bottlecock, who I am told have hit the studio very recently, so be on the listen out for something from them soon. Strangers has the same intensity as Bottlecock but that's where the comparison ends. This duo has a very different sound that gives us more of the sultry, power tones of Ashleigh Kerley. Strangers are are becoming the friends we are getting to know quite well as they pump out the guest spots. They are definitely worth giving up a night on the couch at home for a journey into live music heaven for a listen and look. Keep an eye out for their next show.

Winners of the Tour de France are up next and deliver a solid set. A hard rock four piece with guitar licks that slice their way to the front demanding attention while giving shape and form to the package. There is a classic, dirty, bluesy, rock sound layered over by a harder more edgy, thump that drives home a message and that message is unmistakably clear; this is an act to watch. Only a year old the Winners have the sound that will make your night. The boys have been working on an EP so be expecting a launch sometime early 2013.

Finally the moment I have been waiting for arrives. The four elements that are Zeus Baby descend. Zeus, if you know your Mythology is the father of Gods and Men and Zeus Baby are the Gods of sound and performance art. Hailing from the Gold Coast tonight is the first foray into the Brisbane scene for the feisty four. I discovered these guys when I stumbled over their debut album Destination in our Triple Zed music library and was immediately hooked. Having now seen them in the flesh I am even more deeply hooked. These guys give their all on stage, they don''t just play they truly perform. A feast of sight and sound.

Released in July this year Destination is eleven tracks of pure pleasure, achieving due recognition by having three songs simultaneously appear in the top 10 of the Triple J Unearthed Dance charts. It is very difficult to classify Zeus Baby into a genre, it's like pinning very tasty jelly to a plate. The songs present magnificently crafted lyrics that delve into the mirky recesses of human experience while the music masquerades as a sound you can take home to Mother.

I was interested to see how the live sound would compare to the production quality created by Govinda Doyle, ARIA award winner for his work on the recordings for Angus and Julia Stone in his Water Tank Studio in Northern New South Wales. I was not disappointed in the least despite several laments throughout the show from front man and keys King, Dorian Marcus, over the crapness of his keyboard that decided to intermittently cease to work. If Zeus Baby can sound this good with a broken keyboard I can only imagine the sound would be astounding with a fully functional one.

If you were unlucky enough to miss Zeus Baby this time around then make sure you catch them January 24 at Rics Bar. Their album, Destination can be previewed and purchased at zeusbaby.bandcamp.com. See you on the 24th – seriously – don't miss it..
